LONDON PLANE TREE

Platanus x hispanica

Deciduous shade tree with a broad pyramidal shape reaching 20 metres. Very attractive ornamental tree with large lobed leaves (like maple) turning copper and gold in autumn.

Planting ideas:

  • Perfect for large avenue plantings and driveways
  • Also a good specimen shade tree providing seasonal colour form.

Conditions: Will tolerate a wide range of conditions including poor dry and intermittently wet, heavy or compacted soils.

Cultural Note:

  • Plant in a large hole (40cm width, 50-60cm depth)
  • Leave a 3 inch trough when sowing
  • Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established.
  • Mulch tree with either wood chips or straw. This will "limit" watering and retain soil moisture for a longer period.
